The speaker at the morning meeting on July 28 was Amanda Rutherford of the “Step Up To Justice” organization. “Step Up” is a pro bono legal services group, with a mission to provide a full-service, free civil legal center for low-income individuals and families in Pima County. The legal services are provided through the talents of volunteer attorneys.

Two of the points she shared with us are that current capacity of the government provided public legal services can only serve 6% of those in need. The other point is that because of the small pool of services available, often the “second” person applying is denied services because of a conflict of interest. “Step Up” is working to expand the ability to serve those in need and create an additional source to the current system.

The Goals and Planning sheet for the International Service Committee is completed and attached with this “Update”

At this meeting we started drawing from a new deck of cards. The previous week Amos Meyers drew the target card - the 10 of Hearts. The winning share was almost $125. The winnings will be put to good use on an OV Rotary project. (see later)
While we are catching up on past events, several weeks ago Dave Brown gave Happy Dollars because there was an article about Charlene Meyers in the Sun City Oro Valley monthly magazine. He suggested the article be included in the “Update”. Most importantly – If you are recognized for accomplishments in Rotary or outside of Rotary let me know. We would enjoy including them. It’s like doing a bio without having to stand in front of the Club.

SAVE THE DATE of MARCH 26, 2023
We have Steam Pump Ranch reserved for the
2023 Rotary Club of Oro Valley’s Taste of Oro Valley.
Charlene and Amos Meyers will co-chair the event.
Everyone’s help is needed as always. Already John Barnett has secured the date and location for us. Dennis Breen, Gary Coxon, and Karen Woodford have offered (or been offered) to work to secure sponsors. We can all help with that too. As someone pointed out when we reviewed TOV 2022, sponsorships are where the money is.

Steve Witthoeft has made an informal contact to have the same band, “Ones All”, at the upcoming TOV.

Look for more updates over the coming months. Oh, the winnings from the drawing will be used as seed money for some out of the normal expenses for TOV.
