Meeting Speaker Spotlight

Club member Leo Lawrenson presented a program about the Alliance for Smiles program and his participation in a recent mission to Bangladesh. The program was started by members of  the Rotary Club of San Francisco. The goal was to provide corrective surgery for cleft lip and palate in countries where it is not available and create clinics where the work can continue locally.

Leo recounted the mission, including the benefit it brings to affected children and families, the screening process, dealing with equipment and travel logistics (Leo was the logistics “officer” for this mission), dealing with the local facilities (or the lack of them), and necessary schedule changes due to local holidays and customs.

It was a very enlightening and uplifting program, part of which is illustrated in the following slide.

Lives are changed and families affected, in a positive way!

BNI Fashion Show Donation

Eva Hendricks, chapter president of the local Business Networking International (BNI) chapter was here to present a check for $5,000 to our club. As noted earlier, these funds were the proceeds from a fashion show the BNI chapter put on. The funds were designated for organizations that support families in need. Our board chose to match that amount, so the efforts of BNI generated $10,000 for the Oro Valley Rotary Club to use in support of these important local organizations.

Meeting Notes

December 1st was an exciting and interesting day to be at the Club’s meeting. With a combination of members (several faces that have been absent), members of BNI, visiting Rotarians, new and perspective members, and visitors the room was full. The count was 26 including Zoomers.

President Steve briefed attendees, especially guests, on TOV (the Taste of Oro Valley). The briefing included note of a planning session to follow the club meeting and generated much interest and conversation about participation with the event.
MARCH 26, 2023 is the date for TOV.

If you want to participate in the December 17th wreath laying at the Marana Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery and you have not signed up, contact President Steve to be included. Four clubs are participating, Oro Valley, Saddlebrooke, Marana, and Dove Mountain. Our Club has purchased 20 of the estimated 2000 wreaths that will be needed for this project with Wreaths Across America.
